Why choose a PTO compressor?

It depends upon your needs. If you are operating one or two hand-held shears, a small gas-powered compressor like Brewt Power Systems Honda-powered LB-10 unit is perfectly adequate. You can even run two of the Campagnola SE-4 extension-mounted tools with an LB-10.

However, if you are simultaneously pruning with several tools or if you are operating a high air volume tool like the ST-3 chain saw, you should consider a PTO powered compressor -- particularly if you already have a small tractor with 540 RPM PTO (300 RPM is the recommended speed for driving the compressor). The PTO compressors require little horsepower -- any compact tractor will run an Ecoplus 520, for instance -- and they produce a lot more air than the gasoline powered compressors.
